The history of the Ubud Monkey Forest traces its roots to the mid-20th century when the sanctuary was officially opened to the public in 1966. This lush haven was established as a conservation effort and a cultural attraction.

Originally known as the “Mandala Suci Wenara Wana,” the Ubud Monkey Forest has evolved from a simple forest area to a carefully curated sanctuary. Its creation responded to the need for conservation, aiming to protect and preserve the long-tailed macaque population that calls the forest home.

Establishing the sanctuary was a collaborative effort between the local village community of Padangtegal and the Indonesian government. The mission was to conserve the macaques’ natural habitat and provide a space for research and education about the species.

Hotspot Among Tourists

Attracting approximately 10,000 visitors monthly, the Monkey Forest stands out as one of Ubud’s bustling destinations. Encompassing a vast area of 12.5 hectares, this forest is a favored choice among those seeking a connection with nature.

The resident monkeys lead a content existence, enjoying the freedom to roam without constraints. Devoid of fences or limitations, the monkeys of the Ubud Monkey Park have the liberty to explore as they please. This area is freely accessible, and the monkeys inhabit it voluntarily.

Temples in the Ubud Monkey Forest

The Balinese Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary may appear wild and untouched. However, within the sanctuary’s expanse are three temples dedicated to sacred prayer, all nestled within the sanctuary.

  • Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal
Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal is the main temple in Ubud’s Monkey Forest. The architecture is breathtaking. It’s one of the most magnificent Hindu temples I’ve ever seen, and it appears to have been built with monkeys in mind.

It features elaborate carvings and drawings on the outside walls, and if you sit silently for a long time, you’ll witness monkeys going up and down like tree trunks. The interior is even more impressive. It houses a Lord Shiva deity, and devotees come to seek his blessings. It’s a must-see section since it shows the unique architectural style found exclusively in Bali.

  • Pura Beji (Holy Bathing Temple)
The Pura Beji (Beji Temple) is Ubud’s oldest temple. It is dedicated to the Hindu god Hyang Widhi, who takes the form of Gangga. It’s also well-known for its Barong architecture and virtuosic relief carvings, among the greatest in Bali.

The temple itself is a serene haven of peace. I can’t help but wonder what it must have been like when this place was hopping. A tiny pool of holy water is inside for melukat, or spiritual and physical cleaning. It’s an excellent spot to cleanse before performing Piodalan.

  • Pura Prapajati
Pura Prajapati is located near the forest’s cemetery area, adding a solemn touch to the Ubud Monkey Forest. Dedicated to Prajapati, the Balinese god of death and ancestors, this temple holds cultural significance and enhances the contemplative ambiance of its surroundings.
